Yellow labrador lays on man's lap performing deep pressure therapy.

Deep Pressure Therapy

One very important task Nyssa does for Nick is what’s called “Deep Pressure Therapy” (DPT).  This is when the dog uses its warmth or even its body weight to ease anxiety or another psychiatric symptom (this can also lower blood pressure for those with that disorder). When Nyssa senses Nick getting anxious, she actually come over to him and touches him, snuggling up next to him, but in extreme cases, even hugs him! For those with anxiety or blood pressure disorders, the dog can actually lay on top of them to relieve their anxiety or reduce their blood pressure. This is especially helpful if the person is about to pass out and already on the floor so the dog can easily lay on top of them!
